Every first Sunday after Labor Day, Grandparents Day is celebrated in the United States. President Jimmy Carter was the one who signed the proclamation in 1978 that began the observation of this special observance in the U.S. As for the day's purpose, the statute cites: "...to honor grandparents, to give grandparents an opportunity to show love for their children's children, and to help children become aware of strength, information, and guidance older people can offer."
Today, people honor grandparents on Grandparents Day through a myriad of ways. School students are often asked to participate in storytelling activities or art competitions where grandparents are the main subject. There are also special lessons or special assembly programs for them in children schools.
Two Popular Origins of Grandparents Day
Many people believe that Marian Lucille Herndon McQuade’s efforts have been the driving force that made Grandparents Day possible. With her work in educating the people about the important contributions of senior citizens as well as campaigning for a national day to honor grandparents, it’s kind of difficult to argue against that. However, did you know that there is another person who did the same thing? Michael Goldgar, after visiting his aunt in an Atlanta nursing home in the 1970s, spent his own money in lobbying efforts to have Grandparents Day officially recognized. He even made trips to Washington DC just to meet with legislators.
The official song to commemorate National Grandparents Day is “A Song for Grandma And Grandpa” by Johnny Prill. The song is basically from a grandchild’s point of view, singing his love for his grandma and grandpa. The official flower for Grandparents Day is the “forget-me-not” flower. This flower has been used as a sign of remembrance for centuries.
Other Countries That Celebrate Grandparents Day
Australia, Estonia, Hong Kong, Italy, Mexico, Pakistan, South Sudan, Singapore, Spain, Taiwan, and United Kingdom also celebrate Grandparents Day on varying dates. Countries like France, Germany, and Poland celebrates Grandmother’s Day as a holiday on its own. Poland has its own Grandfather’s Day, too.
