Kids Essential Oils
There is an increasing number of teachers who are gradually introducing essential oils in their classrooms. Many of them are probably using oils in their own homes and have seen the positive effects on their own families, so it only makes sense to extend this into the classrooms.
Nevertheless, while oils can provide a lot of benefits, there are still some things that you need to consider before deciding to introduce this into classrooms. It would definitely be great for teachers, as well as parents, to understand the other factors that may come into play with regards to the use of essential oils in schools.
- Ensure that you’re not breaking any school board policy.
Most schools don’t have a policy on essential oils yet, but to be on the safe side, it’s best to confirm if the school is alright with using oils in classrooms. It would also be advisable to check school regulations on fragrances. Some institutions may categorize essential oils as fragrances since they do have various types of aroma.
- Check the guidelines in the buildings.
Apart from the policy of the school board, you also need to consider any existing rules in your building. Keep in mind that you and your class are not the only tenants in your building, so using oils and diffuser may affect other people as well.
- Find out if any of your students have allergies.
Again, be considerate of others especially your own students. Although essential oils are generally safe for kids, it’s still worth making sure that they are okay with being exposed to certain kinds of smell. Ask them if the aroma is bothering them because some children may have fragrance-induced asthma or others may be very sensitive to the smell of oils. Additionally, find out if there are allergies that you need to take note of and consult with health professionals if the essential oils will actually be able to bring more good.
- Communicate with parents why you will be using oils in the classroom.
You may encounter naysayers or parents who are against using essential oils on their kids. In such cases, you should firstly consider and respect their personal opinions. Secondly, you may try to explain why you will be using essential oils in the classroom and convince them of its benefits. However, at the end of the day, you should be able to realize that not everyone will have the same perception as yours. Don’t force your ideas down their throat. The most important thing to do is to prioritize the wellness of the children.
There are different opinions when it comes to essential oils. Of course, when it comes to kids, parents especially can be very protective. Whether you’re a teacher or a parent who wants to introduce oils in your child’s class, always remember to be considerate of others.
Back-to-school season is a crazy time for parents, especially for those with children who are entering kindergarten. One of the biggest challenges is probably the fact that your kids will be away from the comforts of your home for a considerable amount of time every day. This means that your little kiddos will be exposed to different environments and — gasp — germs!

If you would notice, many kids often get sick early on in the school year, even as early as the third weekend. However, before you freak out and become an overly paranoid parent, know that there are ways for your children to be protected from getting sick.
Using oils in classrooms
Oils have been a part of wellness programs of numerous families, and teachers are starting to adopt the use of diffusers and oils in classrooms as well. And why not? It offers great benefits to children, as it improves the environment they are in.
Here are specific reasons why essential oils are being used by teachers in classrooms:
- Reduces toxins
Kids are healthier when they are exposed to less toxins. And by using oils — whether at home or in classrooms — the wellness of your children will improve in a very natural way. All of these contributes to their overall happiness and development. Of course, when they feel energetic and not sickly, they are more likely to enjoy their formative years.
- Creates a calm environment
Certain oils are capable of producing a soothing effect, and this results in a calm environment where your kids can feel at ease. This further enables them to remember their lessons well and feel a sense of academic achievement. Needless to say, a calm environment is conducive for learning, so a lot of teachers and instructors have been using diffusers in classrooms to help students focus.
- Helps kids stay active and alert
Afternoon classes can be difficult for some kids. It’s around this time when they seem like they’re in a slump, looking less energetic than they were in the morning. Good thing, some oils have properties that can keep your kids stay active and alert even after they have taken their recess or lunch. This is quite important because when children feel sleepy, they won’t likely absorb the lessons being taught during their classes.
